US hempseed supply to be stored in New York repository

Work has begun on creating the nation’s only hempseed bank in New York’s Finger Lakes region.

The Industrial Hemp Germplasm Repository will be established at Cornell University’s agricultural research facility in Geneva.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York announced the launch of the new facility, saying he worked to secure $500,000 in federal funding for the project because of the potential the crop has to boost upstate New York’s economy.

The seed bank will help breeders and geneticists develop new varieties of industrial hemp while also helping identify genes for pest and disease resistance.
